New pattern for CBT launch on August 2nd, 2021

New Test of Competence (ToC) launches 2nd August

We’re delighted to today announce that our new ToC will launch on 2nd August 2021.

It will reflect our new standards for nurses and midwives, and will help ensure that all those delivering care in the UK will meet the same high standards regardless of where they are trained or how long they’ve been out of practice.

What is changing?

In the last two years we’ve introduced world class new standards for nurses and midwives in the UK. These will support nursing and midwifery professionals to develop their knowledge, skills, and experience so that high-quality care can flourish, now and in the future.

They mean patients, the public and people who use services can have confidence in the nursing and midwifery care they receive.

As well as reflecting the new standards, we’ll be making some further changes to the new ToC, which we announced last year:

Splitting the Computer Based Test (CBT) into two parts. Part A will cover numeracy and Part B will cover nursing or midwifery theory.

The new OSCE will have ten stations rather than six. It will assess additional skills as well as the candidate’s values and behaviors, and evidence-based practice.

You can read more about the new ToC, and the details we published in April about how we’ll manage the transition between the new and old tests, on our website.

Booking a CBT

In last month’s update we announced some small changes to how candidates will book their CBT once the new ToC goes live on 2 August. Today we’ve published additional guidance to help candidates, employers and recruiters understand these changes.

Result processing times

For the first few weeks after the new ToC goes live we’ll have extra moderation in place to ensure that all results are fair and accurate. This means that for a short period it may take up to seven working days for candidates to receive their results, rather than our usual target of five working days.

We recognize that it can be an anxious time for candidates who’re waiting for results, so we’ll make sure there are no unnecessary delays while keeping a close eye on the new test.

Resources to help you prepare

A reminder that to help candidates, employers and recruiters to prepare for the new ToC, over the last few months we’ve published a range of resources on our website:

Seven recorded webinars with detailed information on the new ToC

Candidate information booklets for the CBT and OSCE

Test specifications

Test blueprints

Links to test center websites with further resources to help you prepare

We hope all these resources will help candidates, employers and recruiters to feel as prepared as possible for the new test but if you have any questions, please email us.
