The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced nurses and midwives who have qualified outside EU/EEA will now also be able to demonstrate their English language capability by providing at least one of the evidence below:

Evidence: 1

OVERSEAS NURSES REGISTRATION GUIDELINES IN UK

An overall score of at least 7at least 6.5 in the writing section and at least 7 in the reading, listening and speaking sections.

OCCUPATIONAL ENGLISH TEST (OET)

At least a grade C+ in the writing section at least a grade B in the reading, listening and speaking sections.

A RECENT PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING OR MIDWIFERY QUALIFICATION WHICH WAS TAUGHT AND EXAMINED IN ENGLISH

If you wish to rely on evidence that you recently trained in English you must be able to satisfy us that:

• 1– The course was taught and examined in English.
• 2 – The programme demonstrates your ability in reading, writing, speaking and listening in a range of environments.

You will need to provide us with the following:

• 1 – Continue indulged speaking
• 2 – A university transcript of training
• 3 – A letter of reference from your training institution (or ask your training institution to complete sections 8a and 8b on the form to accompany your transcript of training).

Your evidence must confirm that the programme was composed of at least 50 percent clinical interaction. At least 75 percent of that must be with patients, service users, their families and other healthcare professionals must have taken place in English.

Please note, By recent, we mean evidence related to English Language Competence that is less than two years old at the point of making an application to the NMC. The British Council advises two years is the accepted period for an individual to remain proficient in English if the language is used regularly. Proficiency in English deteriorates after two years if it is not used on a regular basis.

Overseas Nurses who completed a (pre-registration) Nursing or midwifery programme taught and examined in English will be eligible to register with NMC. It must have been obtained within the last two years, so the only people eligible will be those who have passed a course within the last two years.​​

For example, if you are a Nurse from Ghana or India or Philippines completed your bachelor’s nursing in 2015 and if you have one-year post registration experience you will be eligible for this scheme.​​​

REGISTRATION AND PRACTICE OF AT LEAST ONE YEAR IN A COUNTRY WHERE ENGLISH IS THE FIRST AND NATIVE LANGUAGE AND AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT WAS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION.

The UK government classifies the following overseas countries as majority native English speaking:

• – Antigua and Barbuda
• – Australia
• – The Bahamas
• – Barbados
• – Belize
• – Canada
• – Dominica
• – Grenada
• – Guyana

• – Ireland
• – Jamaica
• – New Zealand
• – St Kitts and Nevis
• – St Lucia
• – St Vincent and the Grenadines
• – Trinidad and Tobago
• – United Kingdom
• – The United States of America

• If you who wish to rely on evidence that you have registered and practiced in English, you must be able to satisfy us that:
• – You have completed an English language assessment or examination as part of your registration in the country.
• – You have one year post registered to practice in an English speaking setting

• Your registration is in a country where English is the first and native language. You will need to provide us following:
• – A letter of good standing from your licensing authority and
• – Details of the English language assessment that you undertook as part of your registration, and
• – A supporting reference from your employer.

Please note that if we are unable to identify whether you completed an English language assessment as part of your registration then we will require additional confirmation of the registration requirements from the licensing authority where you are registered.

Overseas trained nurses working in native English speaking countries will be eligible to register with NMC if they have registration and one year practice in the country. But they must prove, they have completed an English language assessment or examination as part of their registration in the country.

For example, Indian or Filipino nurses working as a Registered Nurse in Australia will be eligible to register with NMC if they can prove that they have completed an English language assessment as a part of their registration in Australia.

Even if you meet the above English language requirements. You would still need to complete computer-based test(CBT)&The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to complete your registration with NMC.
